The Oregon Coast Part 1

I can predict the weather in Coastal Oregon for any day in August, any year in the near future. It will be partly cloudy, with humidity in the 70 to 80 percent range and daytime temperatures in the mid 60s.  To my friends in Palm Springs, this must sound like heaven right about now!

Many areas on the Oregon coast look like rain forests (minus the tropical part); they are dense with trees and vegetation right up to the coastline. The coast is rocky in some places, sandy in others. We are here primarily to visit the Oregon Dunes National Monument, but we’ve made a few other stops along the way.

While staying in Lincoln City, we visited the town of Newport. These photos were taken at Nye Beach in Newport.

A typical row of beach houses in Coastal Oregon. Most beaches have significant dunes, requiring stairs or ramps over the dunes to gain access.
Oregon beach-goers in jackets and hats in August! Layers of fog and mist come and go throughout the day, even as the sun occasionally breaks through the clouds.
Further south on the same beach as heavier fog and mist moves in.
Frank and Fiona frolic on the beach. Most beaches in Oregon are dog friendly; this one even permitted dogs to be off leash.

Also while staying in Lincoln City, I spent an evening at the town beach in Taft, which is on a point, one side of which faces the bay and the other side of which faces the ocean.

Another typical scene from Coastal Oregon…hills, trees, a tranquil bay at sunset.
The gulls are gathered for their nightly meeting on a section of the peninsula that separates the bay from the ocean.
A creative use for some of the driftwood that collects on this particular beach.

  1. Great pictures. Yes, like the central California coast you may need jackets in august. Don and I are hoping to get up there next year at some point. And yes, those temperatures sound like heaven!

    1. This is intended to reply to both of your comments, since I know you are sharing an email account at the moment. The Oregon coast is lovely, and it was great to be in the cool, humid weather for a few days. But I must confess, I missed my desert landscape and I was delighted to return to it today.
